Flyball got its start sometime in the early 1970s in California. Legend has it that a team’s brief appearance on The Johnny Carson Show sparked the enthusiasm that has carried the sport to where it is today; over 400 active clubs and 6,500 competing dogs.

Flyball, simply put, is a relay race with four dogs on a team. Two teams race side-by-side down a course with four hurdles, release and catch a tennis ball, and then return over the same hurdles. Once a dog has cleared the finish line, the next dog may be released. The first team to have all 4 dogs finish the course without error wins the race.

Flyball teams compete in local and regional tournaments where dogs can earn titles via a point system based on the time it takes a dog’s team to complete each race. All dogs, including mixed breeds, are eligible to compete and earn titles in NAFA sanctioned events. The North American Flyball Association sanctions tournaments and is the “official” rule and judging organization.
